Is It Okay To Drive With Low Fuel

You just finished a tiring day at work, you’re on your drive home, and your low fuel light has come on just as you pull up to an intersection. The left is to the gas station, right is home. Which do you take? We understand how tempting the right turn is, but it is important to know why taking that left to the gas station is vital to your vehicle’s health. Not to mention that getting gas at the right time will save you time and money. Let us explain.

Your Vehicle Needs Fuel

For your engine to create the power it needs to get from point A to point B, it requires the appropriate mixture of fuel and air. When you press the gas, the fuel pump will deliver fuel to your engine while air is being pushed into the engine. The spark plugs ignite the fuel and air mixture, which causes small combustion. The force generated by that combustion gets the engine moving and creating power. If there is too little fuel, the engine’s performance will significantly diminish or even fail altogether. Your European vehicle needs fuel; do not let it run out.

Towing Costs More Than A Tank Of Gas

One disadvantage of running low on gas is that you could run out of gas. This would turn your European vehicle into an oversized metal couch with wheels. This could turn your nice drive home into a night of waiting for a tow truck to take your vehicle to the nearest repair shop that may not be able to get you taken care of until the morning. Not to mention a tow truck is way more costly than a tank of gas. To help prevent this, we recommend getting to a gas station as soon as possible when the low fuel light comes on to avoid running out of gas.

Save Time & Money

Not only will getting a tank of gas keep you from paying for a tow truck, but it could also save you from having to pay for a fuel pump or, worse, a whole new engine. Your European vehicle has a fuel pump that delivers the fuel from the gas tank to your engine. When your gas tank is filled, the pump is submerged in gas. This helps prevent overheating and damage to it. The fuel pump could overheat and break when you run low on fuel. Braking could lead to pieces of the pump getting into the engine, and this will cause damage to your engine. You would have to replace the fuel pump and the whole engine.
