Four Ways to Maintain the Transmission in Your European Car

Driving a European car is all about the experience. But when you’re having trouble with your transmission, you’re probably only experiencing heartache. Motor City European Repair knows all about servicing and repairing European transmissions, and we also have some advice for helping your transmission to stay in the best shape possible.

Check What the Owner’s Manual Has to Say about Transmission Maintenance

The owner’s manual for your European car has detailed information about maintaining all of the systems of your car properly. It’s important to follow those recommendations, particularly regarding the transmission. The owner’s manual should detail what types of maintenance your car’s transmission needs and when to do that maintenance. Preventative services like flushing and refilling transmission fluid protect the transmission and keep it running properly.

Be Alert for Leaks Under the Car

Transmission fluid leaks tend to happen toward the back of the car, so you’re less likely to mistake it for an oil leak or for some other type of fluid leak underneath your car. Transmission fluid is oily in texture, and ideally it should be red or reddish-brown and somewhat clear when you see it. If the fluid you’re finding under your car is opaque brown or black, your transmission fluid needs changing right away.

Don’t Ignore Anything that Feels Different While Shifting

Problems with your transmission are more likely to be noticed by you while you’re driving and changing gears. You might feel as if shifting feels “different” to you somehow, even if you can’t quite put your finger on what that difference is. The gears might have trouble shifting, too. Any time that shifting becomes difficult or the transmission hesitates or surges, that’s a sign that something needs to be addressed.

Take the Car to the Shop if Dash Lights Come On

Most often the transmission doesn’t have its own dashboard warning light. This is because there’s only so much room on the dashboard, so most manufacturers include transmission issues with the check engine light. If you’re noticing sluggish shifting or other issues and any dashboard warning lights come on, it’s best to take the car to a trusted mechanic so that you can have the issue diagnosed properly.
